According to US researchers only 41% of expectant and new mums know that omega3 especially DHA are essential for themselves and their baby. DHA is found in fish oil and made in the body from ALA in flax seed oil.
Dutch researchers found that expectant mums who ate omega3 reported balanced mood after pregnancy and a quick return to optimal health.
A US study also found that babies whose mothers ate fish during pregnancy had higher development scores.
Australian researchers suggest that mums could protect their babies from developing allergies by eating omega3 during pregnancy. They found that babies were three times less likely to become egg sensitive and ten times less likely to develop skin allergies.
Babies brain and eye development is extremely rapid during the last trimester and early months of age. During this time, the brain and eyes use large amounts of omega3, especially DHA - up to 70% of a baby's energy. According to London Metropolitan University's Professor Crawford the developing baby appears to take up DHA in preference to other omega3's such as EPA. This DHA preference is in the region of 30:1
